Welcome back Offbeaters!

Oh how we have missed you. Happy to be back in your loving embrace.

And speaking of loving embrace, friendly writers and literary lovers, have you ever desired a virtual boyfriend?

…Wanna start desiring one right now?

Anyway, what I’m leading to is the wonderful, wild media recommendation for today: Hatoful Boyfriend.

Now trust me, friends, this is going to be one of our very offbeat ones, so bear with me, cause its a trip.

Hatoful Boyfriend is a dating simulator video game, but what makes it offbeat is that instead of anime boys the romantic interests in this story are all birds. Yes, you heard right. Birds. You play the main character, a female human teenager who gets accepted into a prestigious bird academy as the first human student ever. You play the game out by getting involved in high school hijinks and falling in love with one of the many possible pigeon suitors around the school. Its a parody game of the well-known dating sims genre, which can be goofy and stereotypical, but nonetheless popular.

Your suitors range from bookish doves to stuck-up birds to a psychotic pigeon. Its really quite a joy and, though completely offbeat and goofy, can be surprisingly very enjoyable. It even has some unexpected plots and mysteries to uncover. And if falling in love with bird faces isn’t your thing, the game even kindly gives you an anime-esque human representation of the characters to give you a better face to tickle your fancy.

Hatoful Boyfriend has the interactive aspect of a video game with the readability and story-immersion of a book. So yes, its about pigeons. But why not try something crazy and new? If you’re feeling like trying out a new game that’s a little more like the books you love, try it out. Its definitely a wild ride. Not a work of art, but a hell of a lot of fun.

And maybe, just maybe, you’ll meet the avian-love of your life.

Meet birds, fall in love, and stay weird.
