Who Are You and What Do You Do for The Offbeat?
Hi everybody! My name is Katie Dudlets and I’m a junior at Michigan State University with a double major in Journalism and Professional Writing. I’m one of the many editors for The Offbeat and I’m also on the Design Team.
What Do You Love Most About The Offbeat?
I love being a part of a journal that gives voices to offbeat writers across the country. We’ve grown into this sort of quirky community, where writers can give readers a different perspective on the world around them.
What Are Your Favorite Kinds of Offbeat Stories?
Obviously, everything that we publish is offbeat in some way, but I love the pieces that make me feel something, whether it’s shock, discomfort or inescapable laughter. Personally, I’m a big fan of creative nonfiction; being able to make yourself the subject of your story is a real challenge and I love the stories that do so successfully.
What is Your Favorite Thing About Words?
I am so friggin’ fascinated by words it’s unreal. I love that the human eye can look at a series of letters – that are really just scribbled symbols – and understand a concept or meaning. Even spoken words are just muttered sounds that we can automatically recognize and understand. It’s amazing that we can string these together and make art.
What Is One Fact The Offbeaters (Our Readers/Contributors) MUST Learn About You?
Switzerland is my favorite place in the entire world. There is not a single place in the country that doesn’t look like a postcard, and they have the best food. I wish I was back there right now.
What is Your Favorite Scientific Element and Why?
In middle school, I did a presentation on mercury. It’s also a planet. So it’s doubly dope.
