Who Are You and What Do You Do for The Offbeat?
Hi there, I’m Lizzie Oderkirk. I am the managing editor of The Offbeat. I supervise production, communications, and marketing for the journal, keep an eye on the rest of the staff, and handle any additional administrative duties that need doing.
What Do You Love Most About The Offbeat?
Since I joined The Offbeat staff in 2015, I’ve watched it grow further into a bizarre and zany niche that I didn’t realize I loved. With every volume, The Offbeat creates for itself a slightly new identity, playing with traditional journal features and publishing whatever the current submission readers feel belongs. I love the freedom this gives us, and lets the journal reflect the current personalities of the staff.
What Are Your Favorite Kinds of Offbeat Stories?
I personally love poetry. Short, long, rhythmic or prose; most of my favorite contributions to The Offbeat are poems. I tend to enjoy the simple and relatable, but a deep, emotional poem done well can bring me to genuine tears.
What is Your Favorite Thing About Words?
They’re a mess! The English language has so many rules, and breaks every one. Through and rough don’t rhyme. hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia is the fear of long words. Some are ancient and can be traced through history, while others were born yesterday. Words are beautiful and messy and ever-changing, just like all of us.
What Is One Fact The Offbeaters (Our Readers/Contributors) MUST Learn About You?
I’m on your side. If you email us with a question, I will answer it to the best of my abilities or find someone who can answer it better. If your piece we published has errors in it, I promise I am just as, or perhaps even more, upset than you are, and I will do everything in my power to fix it or make it up to you.
What is Your Favorite Scientific Element and Why?
As much as I love science, I’ve never really considered having a favorite element. I guess if I had to say on the spot, I would just pick carbon because it’s extremely versatile. If carbon were a person, it would be fascinated by everything, love learning about new things, and never turn down an opportunity to get involved or help out. Hm… Sounds a bit like me…
