Who Are You and What Do You Do for The Offbeat?
Hey guys! My name is Emily Claus and I’m a senior at Michigan State studying Professional Writing with a minor in Digital Humanities. At The Offbeat I work as an editor and as a member of the design team, which deals with the overall layout of our journal.
What Do You Love Most About The Offbeat?
Not only is the journal much different from typical literary journals, being fun, quirky, and just outright weird sometimes, everyone who works for The Offbeat is really fantastic. We all have a lot of fun working with each other and our authors on producing this journal.
What Are Your Favorite Kinds of Offbeat Stories?
I am personally a huge fan of the crazy and bizarre stories we get sometimes. The ones that just kind of blow you away with how out there they are or bring you huge twists you never saw coming. I love when writers find the perfect balance between making something that is incredibly weird or uncomfortable and something that is still written really well and makes the reader feel for it. Thankfully, we get a lot of those really great stories.
What is Your Favorite Thing About Words?
Oh god, there are a lot of things I love about words, but I think my favorite would have to be just how much they can make us feel. With words, a writer can inspire people or make them happy with their stories, or take them through an emotional rollercoaster that leaves them blown away. Words just have so much power, there is no limit to how they can leave us feeling.
What Is One Fact The Offbeaters (Our Readers/Contributors) MUST Learn About You?
This is like one of those icebreaker games you did in high school where you are supposed to say a really cool fact about yourself, but you draw a blank and end up saying something like “I have three siblings.” I, in fact, do have three siblings, but that’s not really the point. I guess if you really needed to know something essential about who I am as a person, I would tell you that my favorite place in the world is Disney, and if I could be there right now, I would be (most likely in line to meet Ariel).
What is Your Favorite Scientific Element and Why?
Favorite scientific element? Oh boy, as someone who has never been a fan of science, this is a really hard one for me. But I think Krypton is pretty cool. Not only does it make me think of Superman, but it can look like a sweet neon light when used properly.
